Tree service for Cornelius and Davidson — lake lots and college-town oaks
Cornelius is lake lots and Duke Energy's shoreline rules; Davidson is a college town under 100-year-old oaks with its own tree ordinance. Different jobs, same arborist.
Cornelius is where Lake Norman meets the Charlotte suburbs — The Peninsula, Jetton Park, the coves off Torrence Chapel and Bethel Church Roads — and nearly every waterfront lot has a strip of trees along the shoreline that the owner can't simply clear. Duke Energy manages the lake, and its shoreline guidelines set a 50-foot buffer from the full-pond line with tiered limits on cutting, a requirement to replace removed trees with natives, and real penalties: unauthorized clearing can mean losing the dock and losing consideration for lake-use permits for up to five years. Most of our Cornelius work is pruning for view and safety inside those rules, taking out dead and hazard trees the guidelines allow, and documenting it.
Davidson, next door, is a different world: a college town laid out in the 1800s, with Davidson College's campus oaks, Main Street's canopy and the historic neighborhoods around it. The town has one of the more protective tree ordinances in the region and a strong opinion about its canopy. Work there is mostly arborist care — deadwooding, cabling and careful removals of old water oaks and willow oaks between close-set houses.

Questions from Cornelius & Davidson homeowners
Can I cut trees on my Lake Norman lot for the view?
Within limits. Between 10 and 30 feet from the shoreline you can thin up to half the trees over 5 inches and prune lower limbs; the first 10 feet is essentially protected; 30 to 50 feet allows removal with ground cover kept. Dead, diseased and hazard trees can go. Beyond that you need Duke Energy's authorization, and cutting without it can cost you your dock. We know the guidelines and we'll price only what's allowed.
Does Davidson require a permit to remove a tree?
Davidson's tree ordinance is one of the more protective in the area and applies to large trees and to work in the historic district. We check the town's current requirements for your specific tree before we quote, rather than assuming — it's a five-minute call that avoids a fine.
My lake-lot tree is dead. Can you just take it down?
Yes — dead, diseased and hazardous trees are removable under the shoreline guidelines. We photograph it, write a short arborist statement, and if it was over 3 inches we'll advise on the native replacement the guidelines call for.
How much does tree work cost in Cornelius?
Shoreline pruning runs $400 to $1,500 depending on the number of trees; removals $700 to $4,200, more with a crane; lake lots with no truck access to the shoreline sometimes need a barge-side approach or a long crane pick, which we price on site.
