Concord's canopy is mostly oak, and the oaks are mostly two kinds. The willow oak — narrow leaves, tall straight trunk, the tree arching over the historic streets and lining Union Street — is one of the best big shade trees in the Piedmont and can live 150 years or more when it's pruned right. The water oak looks like its cousin from the driveway, but it's a different animal: fast-growing, weak-wooded, and old at 60. It develops hollow trunks, drops large limbs in still air, and carries decay fungus at the base for years before it goes over.
The houses built from the 1950s through the 1970s along Branchview, Burrage, Gibson Village and the streets off Old Charlotte Road were planted with both, and the water oaks are hitting their limit now — while the willow oaks next to them have another half-century in them. Our arborist tells you which one you have, whether it's sound, and what it needs: usually deadwooding and a canopy lift for the willow oaks, and a hard conversation about the water oaks with conks at the base.
What's included
Species & condition assessment
Which oak, how old, how sound — with a sounding mallet and a probe at the base, not just a look from the driveway.
Structural pruning
Codominant leaders, included bark and crossing limbs corrected on young and mid-age oaks before they become a split.
Crown cleaning & deadwooding
Dead limbs out of the canopy over the roof, the driveway and the street — the number-one cause of oak damage claims.
Cabling & bracing
Steel or synthetic support for a valuable oak with a weak union, installed to ANSI A300 Part 3.
Removal
Hollow, decayed or failing oaks climbed and rigged down, or craned out over the house.
Replacement planting
White oak, willow oak, overcup oak or nuttall oak planted where a water oak came out — the right tree for the next 100 years.

Questions we get about oak tree service
How can I tell a willow oak from a water oak?
Leaf shape. Willow oak leaves are narrow and pointed like a willow's, about a half-inch wide. Water oak leaves are wider, spatula-shaped, often with three shallow lobes at the tip. Bark on old water oaks is darker and blockier, and they hold dead leaves later into winter. If you have a big oak near the house and aren't sure, that's what a free inspection is for.
My oak drops limbs on calm days. Is that normal?
It's a known behavior called summer branch drop and it's most common in water oaks and elms, usually on hot, still afternoons in July and August. It's a sign of internal stress and decay. An arborist should look at it before the next limb lands on the car.
Is oak wilt a problem in Cabarrus County?
Not the way it is in Texas or the Midwest, but we still avoid pruning oaks in April through July when sap beetles are active, and we seal any unavoidable wounds. Bacterial leaf scorch, hypoxylon canker and Armillaria root rot are the diseases we actually see on Concord oaks, and all three are worse on drought-stressed trees.
Can a hollow oak be saved?
Sometimes. A tree can stand with a surprising amount of hollow if the shell of sound wood is thick enough — roughly a third of the radius — and the root plate is intact. Our arborist measures it rather than guesses. If it's over the house and the shell is thin, it comes down.
Does the city have rules about big oaks?
For oaks in your own yard on an existing single-family lot, in our experience, no city permit is involved. Oaks in the street right-of-way are city trees under Chapter 50 and can't be removed or root-cut without the city arborist. Some subdivision plats also protect trees that were counted toward the development's landscape requirements under Article 11. We'll check yours.
